Spooky Halloween Popcorn

Halloween is a well-loved holiday for good reason. It sports spooky decorations, elaborate costumes and loads of candy. I’m cool with the first two elements, but giving in to the candy overload can really put a cramp in your healthy lifestyle. To curb the appeal of mounds of available sweets, I recommend two things. Having a wholesome filling dinner before partying or trick-or-treating, and also having some simple feel-good but on-theme snacks on hand. Enter popcorn!

Popcorn is the ultimate whole grain snack. I love using coconut oil for popcorn as it has great creaminess and a wonderful scent (plus keeps this vegan). This would also be yummy with butter, if that’s more your scene. The turmeric in this recipe gives the popcorn a wild orange color and a subtle spicy, herbal note. Black sesame seeds keep the Halloween theme in check and add a little protein.

Spooky Halloween Popcorn
Serves 10

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 10 cups popped popcorn
  • 2 teaspoons black sesame seeds

In a large bowl, combine coconut oil, turmeric and salt; stir to combine. Add popcorn and toss thoroughly to coat. (Most popcorn will turn an electric orangey yellow color, but don’t worry if you don’t get all of them.) Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve.
