Pilates Business Development in RBTT

One of the hallmarks of the RedBird Teacher Training Program (RBTT) is the time and focus that is spent on business development.  The RBTT education is a deep dive into the art and science of movement through the practice of Pilates.  It is an intense study of anatomy, biomechanics, neuromuscular reeducation and the mastery of over 700 Pilates exercises.  The RBTT curriculum educates students in how to teach, so that when they graduate, they are ready to lead and instruct with sound principles.
But these skills, as valuable as they are, are not enough to secure success in this profession.  I’ve sat through many wonderful training programs over the years as I cultivated my expertise in movement and exercise science. However, in these Pilates and exercise trainings, I was never taught how to develop business.  That I learned through sales training in my time in the corporate world.  As a business owner, I can speak with purpose when I say that a teacher or trainer with refined knowledge in movement, AS WELL AS skill and comfort in growing clientele is much more valuable to me than a teacher or trainer without these skills.  
Many of our teachers initially feel blocked by the idea of “selling” our services.  They love teaching, training, and seeing our clients progress.  It takes a higher-level thought process to understand that in order to have the privilege to teach these clients, we must first serve them.  We do this by opening their minds to the realization that they need the work in order to make the changes they desire in their lives, that the work is worth the financial investment and worth prioritizing, and that RedBird is a community that will enhance their lives.  This is service.  This is also sales and business development.  It is an invaluable set of skills for those wanting to be successful in this (or any) profession.
It is empowering to understand that what we do is not sales in a traditional sense but rather a process of client education. To impact change in peoples’ lives, we must refine our skills of educating them as to how we can best serve them with our programs and methodology. 
Attentively listening to the answers of compassionate questions designed to help your clients uncover their true motivations for wanting to change their lives is not just a skill.  It is a gift to be given.  Helping others unpack their reservations about being a stranger in a new environment, their doubts of success and fear of failure is a powerful experience.  Leading them toward choices that will, with time, trust and guidance, transform them and their lives, is an extraordinary experience.  This is what we do at RedBird.  We transform lives.  We have the method, the education, the skill, and the community to do it.  But first, we must bring them to us.  And to draw them in we must build the trust from the moment they walk in our door, based on the promise that we can lead them and will deliver on their hopes for a healthier life.  We ask questions, we listen to the answers, we help them to uncover what it is they truly want, and then we help them get it.  This is selling as a SERVICE.  It starts in RBTT, so that our teachers grow not only to be great practitioners, but strong leaders and communicators to help our people live their dreams.
